Airport Fire Fighting services

Every time a plane takes off or lands these fire and rescue personnel are ready to snap into action should anything go wrong. As air passengers we generally never see them or possibly even realise they’re at the airport, yet we’re all safer every day because of them.

We spent a day shooting airside at Melbourne Airport creating images of firefighters at the on-airport Fire Station and the impressive Hot Fire Training Ground, where firefighters train and run rescue drills using a life-size replica airplane in which engine fires and ground fires can be lit by remote control.

A jet engine engulfed in flames being doused by firefighters obviously makes a compelling image – but we also created images of the less showy but equally important work: maintenance and readiness of equipment, and a constant vigilance to put skills into action at a moment’s notice.
